LASER-Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation- is now available for use at Freilich Jewelers. In the past, attachment of jewelry parts usually needed intense heat to join metals together to either construct new pieces or to repair heirlooms that had been damaged. A torch (usually a mixture of natural gas and oxygen) created that heat quite effectively. However, in the process, all parts nearby the flame would also get hot-extremely hot- in the neighborhood of 1200-1500 degrees. The result often was the destruction of most precious gems that were located around the damaged area. To prevent such damage, jewelers had to either remove heat sensitive stones, or worse yet, use low melting point joining material effectively destroying the precious value of the heirloom.
The laser we use at Freilich Jewelers uses heat in a totally different form. It uses light. Yes, amazingly, the same light that you read from, work and study by, the light everywhere around us gets transformed into an incredibly intense beam that is able to weld parts together. The light coming out of a laser is so compact that its' beam can shoot across an open plain up to nine miles! The most important feature is that the laser beam can weld precious heirlooms without the danger of destroying the stones! Antique jewelry, which had been near impossible or not cost effective to repair, can now be done with this machine.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Many fine antique pieces were constructed of platinum. Platinum is truly one of the most precious metals, and can be very difficult to work with. Its joining temperature is extremely high and even diamond can be destroyed if the piece is heated to full repair temperature. If there are stones in the jewelry and not easily removed, many jewelers are forced to use lower melting white gold joining material to prevent heat damage. The Freilich laser makes platinum restoration and repair completely possible. In addition, the pieces are Welded and not soldered. There will never by any discoloration due to improper materials being used.
Most jewelers really do not like to work on costume jewelry. As mentioned above, repairs usually need intense heat. With fine faux jewelry, the metal is usually what is called base metal and does not join well using torch techniques. The stones are often glued in and any heating with a torch will usually make them fall out. The laser at Freilich's can and often does come to the rescue.
Many of us have had expensive eyeglasses break only to be told that they were not repairable, or if they were to be repaired, a very messy job would result. Often, the new eyeglasses are made with a percentage of TITANIUM, a lightweight metal, by almost impossible to repair with traditional techniques. We at Freilich's, however, have a laser to do the repair. Along with a controlled environment of argon gas, we can laser weld the titanium frames almost seamlessly.
