Allan was born in 1952 in the Bronx, New York. He graduated from Music and Art High School at the age of sixteen. After graduating from City College of New York, he attended the Manhattan School of Music on a full scholarship, specializing in classical trumpet and orchestration. He received a Mater's Degree and continued his career as a free-lance trumpet player in the greater New York area.

While attending college, Allan worked part time in the family jewelry business. The business was established in 1939 by his father Norman, a master watchmaker. After getting married in 1977, Allan joined the business as a full time member.

While working as President and CEO of Freilich Jewelers, he has continued his jewelry education by studying with Hungarian master jeweler Andrew Poeshty. He continues his studies by attending seminars, as well as keeping current reading and writing for well known jewelry periodicals.

Freilich Jewelers is currently the first jewelry store in the Bronx and Westchester to have a Rofin Laser welder. This allows them to handle all types of custom jewelry work, precious stone antiques, and eye glass repair.

Allan has followed in his father's footsteps as vice-president of the Consolidated Jewelers Association of Greater New York. This organization has over 400 members, and is dedicated to the commitment of higher ethical standards in the jewelry profession.
